CTS Parallel On-Board Charger Solution for Electric Marine Applications
A European marine manufacturer was developing a new generation of electric vessels with the goal of improving energy efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing the overall user experience. To meet the increasing demand for reliable and fast charging solutions in marine electrification, the customer required a high-performance onboard charging system that could efficiently charge a high-capacity lithium battery pack within a practical charging time.
The customer’s vessel was equipped with a 96V 400Ah lithium battery system, with two battery packs connected in parallel, creating a high-capacity energy storage system for extended cruising range and stable power output.
For marine applications, the charging system needed to meet several key requirements:
- High charging efficiency and reliability for daily marine operation
- Compatibility with a 96V lithium battery system
- Compact installation design suitable for limited onboard space

A traditional single charger could not provide sufficient charging power within the required timeframe, so the customer was looking for a modular and scalable charging architecture.
Based on the vessel’s power requirements, CTS Charger provided a parallel OBC charging solution using three units of 6.6kW On-Board Chargers (OBCs).

By connecting two 6.6kW OBC units in parallel, the total charging output reached 13.2kW, significantly reducing charging time while maintaining system stability and redundancy. With multiple independent charging modules, the system provides additional reliability. Even if one charging unit requires maintenance, the remaining chargers can continue supporting vessel operation.
